On The Farm | Happy New Year

Happy new year from all of us at Harry Street Meats!

2016 was a fantastic year from us, and things have certainly come a long way since the previous year. The harvest wasn’t necessarily a large one however it has been the first time we’ve been able to bring everything in the dry and bale all the straw without a drop of rain falling! That’s a huge success!

It’s also been the first year that we’ve had a considerable amount of beef cattle outside thanks to a lot of great weather. This also allowed Harry to bread calves outside too and he definitely looks forward to this enterprise growing from strength to strength. The indoor unit was also at full capacity, housing 150+ calves throughout the end of summer and into the autumn months. As you can imagine, feeding 150+ calves twice daily on top of everything else is quite a juggle!

Towards the end of the year, Turkeys became a huge focus. In just under a year, Harry’s turkey enterprise has trebled in size and we produced 250 free range turkeys! This year; Harry plans to grow this further so there’s a lot to be done. Perhaps the biggest improvement has been the purchase of two purpose built poultry houses - this has greatly improved Harry’s work life as well as the welfare of the birds.

Finally, Christmas was an eventful and busy time but as always, a time of year to celebrate and spend with our family and friends. Because of all our successes and hard work this year, there was something even special about this year's Christmas! From all of us at Harry Street Meats, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and an excellent start to the New Year.

We’re all excited as we look forward to the rest of 2017. This month, Harry’s planning on tying up a few loose ends on the farm - there’s a lot of small jobs all over the place to finish up before he plans the year head.

News | The Benefits of Lean Meat

On the Farm | A Taste of Turkey Life

So the Christmas season begins again, and we welcome our fifth rafter of turkeys back onto the farm. Harry first started selling his free range Bronze turkeys for Christmas 4 years ago and due to high demand for fresh and local produce the number of turkeys reared has increased every year. This year we have been able to develop the turkeys home. Housing them in two large poultry huts (pictured above). The poly-tunnel is very hygienic and spacious increasing the turkeys welfare to very high standards. They are free to roam outside in the daytime growing on a grass-fed and corn diet. 

The turkeys are now three months old and starting to grow all of their adult feathers. (going into full plumage) Turkeys grow very large and thick feathers to make them warm in the winter months and display an impressive ray of colours when fully grown. 

Our turkeys are really inquisitive and like to explore their surrounding environment. In there field we have put a large hay bale for them to climb up, sit on and fly off. Like peacocks; turkeys are attracted to shiny objects, we have also made a frame that has CDs hanging from it. This encourages the turkeys to move around and be active improving their health and therefore enhancing the flavours of the meat.

On the Farm | Veal Calves join Cattle in Meadows

The first months of Summer have been very welcome, and we are hoping for more of the same, but we all know how unreliable the weather can be at this time of year! With the good weather we have started to rear our young veal calves outside amongst our other cattle in the meadows. 

Even though they are young, being outside improves the health of the animals. They receive natural nutrients from the grass and have copious amounts of space to exercise in. 

Our Beef Cattle and Veal Calves have recently moved onto a National Trust area called The Meadows. The cows are loving it!

On the Farm | Successful Lambing Season

It’s a beautiful time of year to be walking across our Great British countryside, especially in the surrounding areas of our farm near Blandford. The high levels allow you to overlook vast amounts of green pastures into neighbouring counties such as Wiltshire and Somerset. In our own fields the Wheat and Barley is in full flower and we aim to harvest this in the middle of August. The Oilseed Rape has now finished flowering, losing that lovely bright yellow that carpets the countryside in May. This should be ready to harvest in in July.

SUCCESSFUL LAMBING SEASON
Our lambing season has now finished and it's a joy to watch the young ones playing in the fields and being inquisitive in their surroundings. We had a successful season, with over 90 Suffolk Texel Cross sheep added to our flock. After a day of shearing, the mothers can now enjoy the start of the summer weather with their young lambs.

Stay safe with your dog this Summer
With people walking across the countryside and livestock in the fields, it’s vital that everyone plays their part in keeping animals safe. Latest figures show there were more than 700 cases of  dog attacks on sheep and cattle on British farms last year, costing farmers an estimated £1million. Even the most well behaved dogs can chase lambs and ewes, which puts them in danger of injury.
